The Oil Sludge Market As a Resource for the Oil Industry

World Bank reports that there is approximately 9 billion metric tonnes of oil sludge on the planet. This oil sludge is generated as a by product of the oil drilling and refining process, and consists of water, oil, solids and a range of chemicals that may have been introduced to the sludge at some point in the process.

MIST Month - "323" Almost Any Oil Waste

The MIST 323 system is used in both oil slops treatment and oil sludge treatment, and is capable of treating both solid waste and liquid waste. Solid waste including drill cuttings, oil sand, and heavy oil sludge. Liquid waste including oil slops, oil based mud waste, decommissioning waste, well washings, and refinery waste.

We have now treated over 60,000 tons of crude oil sludge and slops at the Grangemouth refinery and recovered over 12,000 tons of high quality crude oil. Somewhere over 80,000bbl of crude recovered over a 10 year period. How did we do it?

SASES Successfully Handles USA Oil Slops Treatment

SASES was supplied with a sample of oil slops waste (pictured right) from operations in Texas, USA where an effective chemical dosing and separation process was being sought. For this project, SASES were set the task of maximising oil and solids recovery so that the clean water fraction could be recovered for polishing and safe disposal via salt-water disposal wells. This would require SASES products to effectively split the waste into three distinct phases of oil, water and solids, in order to maximise the recovery of clean oil thus retaining a high water quality for disposal.

Tank Bottom Sludge Oil Recovery

SASES recieve many oil sludge waste samples, for this particular project the sample provided was black, oil coloured and contained a high oil content. The sample had been recovered from tank bottom sludge from a crude oil storage tank and sent to us by one of our customers to try and create a three phase split of oil, water and solids.

The MIST system. Injecting quality into oil waste treatment

SAS Environmental Services helps refineries and waste management companies save millions of dollars every year by maximizing oil recovery and minimizing hazardous waste volumes.

The MIST system (Microemulsion Injection & Separation Technology) and the SAS-ES chemistry effectively split even the toughest oil sludge into its main parts of oil, water and solids without the need for costly heating or multi-million dollar engineering systems.

When using the SAS-ES MIST system to treat oil sludge and refinery waste, the recovered oil is of extremely good quality and can be immediately returned to the refinery or sold on the open market. The resulting solid phase is a fraction of what it normally would be and contains only small amounts of oil and water, significantly reducing disposal costs.
